MBAH is holding an annual meeting to elect or re-elect board
members and officers on February 27, 2018 at 7pm at Fadi's
Mediterranean Grill, 12360 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77077. This is a
great opportunity to take a leadership role in the determining the role MBAH
takes in the Houston legal community. There are 8 attorney board positions and
1 law student observer position on the ballot. To run for positions on the
board or to vote, you must be an active member, which entails paying annual dues.
Annual dues are $20 for attorneys and $10 for law students. Dues can be paid
online at http://www.mbahouston.net/p/members.html.
Candidates who wish to be on the ballot should pay their
dues online and submit a short statement of interest by February 15, 2018 to elections@mbahouston.net (who you
are, what you’re running for, and why - 150 words or less). Members who are not
running for a position but wish to vote may pay their dues up to the beginning
of the annual meeting.
An email with a list of candidates for the positions will be
sent by February 20th. Votes will be tabulated at the annual
meeting. The old board will hold a meeting immediately after the annual meeting
and the the new board will go into effect March 1, 2018.
There are 9 board positions available and they are listed
below with a brief description of intended responsibilities:
President – The leader and face
of MBAH. Responsible for calling and leading board meetings and general membership
meetings, and generally promoting the interests of MBAH members.
Vice President – Performs the
presidents duties if the president is absent or unavailable, supports the
president in executing MBAH goals
Secretary – record votes and
minutes of meetings, keep the bylaws, ensures compliance with by-laws and non-profit
status
Treasurer – Manages organization
finances jointly with the President
External Liaison (for NAML/HBA,
etc) – Develops contacts with outside bar associations and attends meetings
MBAH is invited so, such as attending National Association of Muslim Lawyers (NAML)
board and Houston Bar Association (HBA) Quarterly lunch meetings
Law student representative - a liaison between law students and lawyers in
the Houston community. Due to 501(c)(6) rules, this is an observer position
The following three board member
positions are “at-large” but are delegated the following responsibilities:
Board Member (Communications) – Responsibilities
include managing communication channels such as posting content on MBAH’s website,
social media accounts, and email mailing lists.
Board Member (CLE)- Responsibilities
include creating and managing CLE programs and events, including inviting
speakers, submitting paperwork to the State Bar, and tracking attendance and
reporting hours.
Board Member (Community Service)–
Responsibilities include coordinating pro bono and community service activities
that MBAH may sponsor or co-sponsor with other organizations.
